Lao enterprises build capacity to deliver quality apprenticeships and workplace training
VIENTIANE (ILO News) – Representatives of enterprises, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions and skills development providers in the Lao People's Democratic Republic have strengthened their capacity to provide quality apprenticeships and effective workplace training.
Fifty human resources officers, TVET trainers, and enterprise representatives participated in a programme held in Vientiane from 21 to 22 October 2026 which focused on strengthening the capacity of enterprises to design and deliver high-quality apprenticeships and internship programmes.
The workshop was organized by the ILO-China Partnership Project on Strengthening Skills Development in ASEAN through South-South and Triangular Cooperation, in collaboration with the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI).
Participants deepened their understanding of the role of employers in promoting quality apprenticeships and learned about the ILO’s Recommendation No. 208 on Quality Apprenticeships. They also gained insights from the experience of the ILO’s Quality Apprenticeships Programme in promoting lifelong learning in China.
The programme promoted stronger cooperation between enterprises, TVET institutions and skills development providers to better align training with labour market needs. A practical session covered training needs assessment, planning and preparation, training delivery methods, as well as monitoring and evaluation processes to improve workplace learning programmes.
“The ILO-China Partnership Project on Skills Development will continue to promote quality apprenticeships and work-based learning opportunities to help address skills shortages and skills mismatches, enhance productivity, and support access to quality employment and decent work in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, “said Tian Feng, Project Manager and Coordinator of ILO/China Partnership Project on Strengthening Skills Development in ASEAN through South-South and triangular cooperation, which is funded by Chinese government through Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security.
